The federal government has imposed a state of emergency to curb preventing between rival gangs.

Tens of 1000’s of suspected gang members have been arrested in El Salvador since late March, when the federal government imposed a state of emergency amid a surge in homicides.

Greater than 24,000 presumed gang members have been detained and in late April the federal government prolonged the emergency decree for an additional 30 days because the roundups proceed.

The 2 most important rival gangs working in El Salvador are the Mara Salvatrucha, extra generally generally known as the MS 13, and the rival Barrio 18 or 18th Road Gang. Each have their roots in Los Angeles in the USA.
